The Makers’ Programme: Launch Event
The Makers' Programme is a partnership between Het Nieuwe Instituut, the Dutch Digital Heritage Network, and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision. This consortium is investigating how institutions and makers can capitalise on the creative reuse potential of digital heritage. The aim is to inspire artists, designers and makers to use resources in heritage institutions, and to introduce heritage institutions to a (new) network of contemporary makers. The Makers' Programme launches on 4 May.
4 May 2021 13:00 - 14:30
This first meeting is aimed at makers who have no previous experience of working with heritage materials but would like to explore the possibilities. The artist AiRich has been invited to talk about her work and partnerships with heritage institutions and archives. Through her photographs, performances and body painting, AiRich creates powerful images that reject the standard Western ideal of beauty and show the urgent need to redefine the Black identity. She will talk about her working process, her sources of inspiration and how she reuses images. AiRich has worked with a variety of heritage institutions, including The Black Archives, the Rembrandt Museum and the Van Gogh Museum. There will be an opportunity to talk with her after the presentation.

Makers' Programme
The creative reuse of heritage collections leads to countless new ways of telling stories, in new forms, that appeal to new target groups. Museums, libraries and archives are already working with artists, designers and other makers to make digital heritage visible in an innovative way. Most of these partnerships have a project-based character. There are few structural activities and partnerships with makers. Many heritage institutions find it difficult to reach a community of makers and involve them in the development of creative productions in a sustainable way. In addition, there is sometimes a lack of knowledge about how they can promote the collection for creative reuse.
The Makers' Programme promotes a dialogue between heritage institutions and makers, allowing them to get to know each other during online knowledge sessions. Together they explore various topics. What can institutions learn from partnerships with makers? How can heritage institutions best facilitate creative partnerships? How can works be made accessible in a sustainable way? How can these partnerships be opened up to the entire heritage field? The insights generated by these interactions are shared. In addition, work is underway to set up a network of makers interested in the creative reuse of heritage, in order to make the most of the potential of digitised cultural heritage.
The Makers' Programme is an initiative of the Dutch Digital Heritage Network - see its website (Dutch only) for more information about this programme.
