Open Archive
The second edition of 'Open Archive' takes a look behind the scenes at the work of the three selected artists - Jessica de Abreu, Michiel Huijben and Femke Dekker. These makers went in search of new stories in digital collections to create media artworks on the theme 'activism and archives', to be shown at Het Nieuwe Instituut in June 2021.
29 April 2021 19:30 - 21:00
Het Nieuwe Instituut and Sound and Vision join forces with the International Institute of Social History for Open Archive. This project stimulates the creative reuse of digital heritage collections, making them available and usable for artists, with room for new and diverse creative and technical interpretations.
Jessica de Abreu
Anthropologist and curator Jessica de Abreu studied social and cultural anthropology, and culture, organisation and management at VU Amsterdam. De Abreu co-founded The Black Archives - a historical archive for the history, culture, and literature of Black people in the Netherlands and abroad - and her work focuses on the African diaspora, anti-Black racism, and post-colonial perspectives.
Michiel Huijben
Focusing on architecture, Michiel Huijben's writing, performances, videos, and installations depart from, intervene in, and dissect the built environment to give voice to unspoken narratives and speculative legacies. Huijben has been a resident artist at De Ateliers in Amsterdam, has an MA in architectural history and theory from CASS, London, and founded the publishing project Flat i. He has shown his work at Kunstinstituut Melly, De Appel, Extra City and Kunsthalle Basel.
Femke Dekker
A radio veteran and beacon of distorted and enchanting sounds, Femke Dekker's signature style - under the name Loma Doom - explores electronic experimentalism for the spirit and for movement. Her music searches for a space where intuition and understanding can meet at the extremes to avoid linearity. Curiosity is key for Dekker, whether explored through music or contemporary art in her versatile practice as a curator, moderator and teacher. She is part of the editorial team for online radio station Ja Ja Nee Nee, curates cultural programmes at festivals such as Lente Kabinet, develops content for the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam, and is a guest lecturer at the Sandberg Institute and the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague.
