Open Archive allows three makers to create new media work from archival collections

Artist Guy Königstein, filmmaker Donna Verheijden and artist/designer Oana Clitan have been invited by Het Nieuwe Instituut and the Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision to develop new media works based on both institutions’ online digital collections as part of the Open Archive project. They have seven months to develop the works before they are presented at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam in October.

Loans to the Design Museum: Modern Nederland 1963-1989

Works by Joost Baljeu, Kho Liang Ie, Carel Weeber and Jaap Bakema and others from the collection of Het Nieuwe Instituut are on display from 23 March at the Design Museum in Den Bosch in the exhibition ‘Modern Nederland 1963-1989’, which examines the role of the Dutch government as a patron of modern design.

The Dutch Bauhaus Network


Het Nieuwe Instituut has loaned more than seventy objects from the State Archive of Dutch Archticture and Urban Planning to the exhibition netherlands <> bauhaus – pioneers of a new world, which opens at Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen on 9 February. The loan includes works by Johan Niegeman (1902-1977), Cornelis van Eesteren (1897-1988), Mathieu Lauweriks (1864-1932) and Lotte Stam-Beese (1903-1988).

Collection Book for Children: Hi, I'm a Line


On 20 October, Het Nieuwe Instituut presents two children’s books: one is a reader - Hoi, ik ben een lijn (Hi, I’m a Line); the other is an activity book - Hoi, jij bent een ontwerper (Hi, You’re a Designer). Both books introduce children to highlights of the State Archive of Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning and to architecture as a profession. Initiator and author Behrang Mousavi and project leader Clara Stille-Haardt reveal how the books were devised.

‘Closer to Architecture’. Masterplan for the disbursement of 11 million euros

On 17 July, Minister Ingrid van Engelshoven of the Department of Education, Culture and Science (OCW) issued a disbursement letter based on the 'Closer to Architecture’ masterplan officially allocating the first half of the 11 million euros awarded in March for the restoration, conservation and digitisation of Het Nieuwe Instituut’s collection. 

Jelles archive catalogued

The archive of architect Evert Jelles has recently been catalogued and digitised. Jelles was a leading representative of the Dutch late Functionalist tradition in the period 1965-85 and is credited with rediscovering the work of Jan Duiker.

Dissident Gardens reference images

In the run-up to the exhibition Dissident Gardens, all sorts of images were pulled from the collection to serve as reference material for research, display and communications. The majority were ultimately not used, but they give an impression of possible perspectives on the central theme of Dissident Gardens – the classic struggle between nature and culture – in relation to architecture and the built environment.

A Speculative Archive for Dutch Design
